Looking for the perfect Bear Lake day trip itinerary? Whether you’re escaping for a weekend or just passing through, Bear Lake offers crystal-clear waters, epic outdoor adventures, and small-town charm that feels like a hidden gem. Known as the “Caribbean of the Rockies” for its vibrant turquoise water, this mountain lake on the Utah-Idaho border is a must-visit destination.
Here’s how to spend one unforgettable day at Bear Lake—packed with food, fun, and a one-of-a-kind overnight stay.
Morning:
Stay the Night at the Bear Lake Monster House
Start your Bear Lake adventure already close to the action. The Bear Lake Monster House is a fun, family-friendly stay for groups (up to 25) - fully stocked, thoughtfully themed, and designed with kids in mind. Located just minutes from the water, it’s the perfect spot to come back to after a day at the lake.
Breakfast at Rucas
Fuel up with aebleskivers (round, Danish pancakes), a yogurt parfait, or avocado toast at one of Bear Lake’s best breakfast spots.
Morning Swim or Paddle at Ideal Beach
Head straight to the beach. We offer FREE access to Ideal Beach where you'll find sandy shores perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or paddleboarding. Plus, you can cool off in one of two pools or let the kids play on the playground right off the beach. Rent a jet ski, kayak, or paddleboard from nearby outfitters, or simply relax and soak in the sun.
Pro Tip: The water is clearest and calmest in the morning - perfect for paddling!
Midday: Caves, Culture, and Iconic Eats
Lunch at Zipz
Some may fight us on this one as Zipz is right next door to LaBeau's, but we actually love the menu better at Zipz. You'll find famous raspberry shakes at both locations, but Zipz also offers dairy-free options. Pair it with a cheeseburger, turkey BLTA, pulled pork sandwich and fries.
Explore Minnetonka Cave
Just a 40-minute scenic drive into Idaho, Minnetonka Cave offers a cool and educational break from the summer heat. This guided cave tour takes you deep into limestone chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and fascinating history. Note: cave tour dates do not open up until June 12, 2026 and you will probably want to reserve your tickets online as they can go fast.
Afternoon: Hidden History & Lakeside Leisure
Visit the Butch Cassidy Museum in Montpelier
Dive into Bear Lake’s outlaw past with a visit to the Butch Cassidy Museum. This hidden gem tells the story of the famed train robber’s local connection and is perfect for families and history buffs. Typically, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It is free to enter and you will find some gift shop items.
Street Address: 833 Washington St, Montpelier, Idaho.
Evening: Dinner and a Sunset to Remember
Dinner at Coopers at Bear Lake West
Enjoy dinner with a view. Head to Coopers, perched above the lake with patio seating that has perfect lake views.
Work Off Dinner with Some Pickleball
Head to one of 3 pickleball courts for a friendly game of pickleball. You'll find two courts available to the public - one near the Bear Lake Visitors Bureau at 69 N Paradise Pkwy and the other at Heritage Park. The third court is for members only at Ideal Beach, which our guests have access to. We also provide some pickleball paddles and balls at the house.
Catch Sunset at Bear Lake Overlook
Wrap up your day with a short drive up Logan Canyon to the Bear Lake Overlook. The sweeping views of the turquoise lake as the sun dips below the mountains is truly unforgettable.
Return to the Bear Lake Monster House
After a full day of sun, fun, and adventure, head back to the Bear Lake Monster House. Whether you're soaking in the peaceful evening views from the porch, sitting around the firepit, or playing games with the family, it's the perfect place to wind down and rest.
